Extensions are trending more now than ever. With so many types of hair and installation methods, knowing where to start can be a little confusing. Therefore, we are here to help you know more about hair extensions. These following questions are the most common ones that you may want to ask. Let’s find out the answers.

1. Should I Get Hair Extensions?

There are many reasons why you should get hair extensions, right below are some common reasons to answer the question.

  • Length and Volume

Hair extensions not only help you achieve long, thick hair but also don’t interfere the growth of your natural hair while you are wearing them. Therefore they are suitable especially for who is experiencing hair loss or having difficulty growing out the natural hair. Moreover, hair extensions can help you cover a bad haircut up or create a more voluminous hair look.

  • Color and Style

If you want to change up your look and add in highlights/lowlights or ombre, but don't want to damage your natural hair or don't want to fully commit to the look, hair extensions will allow you to be experimental with your hair without the full-time commitment.

2. What Are The Different Types Of Extensions?

  • Micro link/Micro bead/Micro-ring/Loop Hair Extensions

Micro ring hair extensions are perfect if you’re looking for a more long-term solution to lengthen your hair. Strand by strand, a micro loop extension is applied to a similar sized piece of your own hair around 1cm away from the scalp. Tiny, silicone lined aluminium rings hold the extensions securely in place, without the need for any harsh glues or chemicals. You need to go to a professional for the application of micro-bead hair extensions.

  • Sewn-in/Weave Hair Extensions

This type of extensions is applied by braiding your natural hair into small braids, then using a needle and thread to sew the weave into the braid. Sew-in hair extensions are usually used for people with thick hair as they need a solid base to be sewn into. You need to go to a professional for the application of sewn-in hair extensions as well as consistently visit the salon (even six weeks or so) to ensure that the extensions are still sewn in correctly into place and if the braids need to be tightened up again.

  • Clip-in Hair Extensions

Clip-in hair extensions are temporary hair extensions. They come in strands of wefts (contoured pieces), attached at the base with either fabric or silicone. Every set of clip-in hair extensions has particular hair wefts that diversify in size. Each weft comes with sturdy clips that have silicon or fabric grips to ensure the extensions are connected with your origin hair. To use clip-in hair extensions, you just simply press the back of the clip to open and click back to close.

  • Tape in Hair Extensions

Tape-in hair extensions (semi-permanent extensions) are one-inch pre-taped wefts that are exactly what they sound like – “tape in’’ in between your own hair. The tape used is a medical sticky tape which is usually strong and allow you to move freely. Typically, a hairdresser or a licensed cosmetologist would apply tape-ins as they need to align with the roots of your origin hair, and then a heated clamp would be used to stick the weft to your hair properly. Moreover, tape-ins also need to be removed professionally with special glue remover to avoid damage to the hair follicles.

  • Glue-in/Keratin Bond/Pre-bonded Hair Extensions

These hair extensions are attached to the hair with keratin bonds that are on top of the extensions, which are fused with a hot tool. This technique requires heat for application, and consistent visits to the salon to maintain them. They can look great, however, it is best to voice using oils, conditioners or any hot styling tools because this can weaken the bonds and make the extensions come out.

3. Should I Get Synthetic Or Natural Hair Extensions?

It’s the best to choose 100% natural hair. We also recommend you to invest the highest quality hair you can afford. The extensions may be expensive but they can last for many refits so in the long term, the cost is reasonable.

Although synthetic hair is cheaper than natural hair, but the quality is not good enough for long term use. Synthetic extensions are usually unnaturally shiny and doesn’t allow for heat styling, which means you can’t create styles or color them without strong damage.

4. How Do I Know Which Type Of Hair Extensions I Should Get?

Temporary methods are great for occasional wear and are usually used by those who like their own hair but just want to enhance their look for the weekend, or for a special event.

Clip in hair extensions are excellent as they can be easily clipped in and styled in minutes and then removed just as easily.

Permanent methods are good for those who are disappointed with their own hair and feel they need additional hair to gain extra volume, length or both on a daily basis.

5. How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost?

It is difficult to know exactly what is an appropriate price to pay because the cost of hair extensions varies so widely. You can expect to pay anywhere from $60-$85 for synthetic hair extensions, and anywhere from $100-$500 or more for human hair extensions. We highly recommend purchasing real Remy human hair extensions as they are much higher quality than synthetic hair extensions as you will be able to style and wash them just like your own hair.

6. How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

Clip-in hair extensions can be made with either synthetic or human hair. Synthetic extensions usually have a shorter lifespan than human hair extensions, they can last a few months, depending on their use and care. If they are properly cared, they can last anywhere from 3 months up to a year or even longer.

Tape-in extensions can last up to three months, or even four months, depending on how they are used and cared for. They are generally more expensive than other types of extensions as they are designed to be worn for longer time.

With proper care, the sewn-in extensions can last six to eight weeks. Nevertheless, it’s not advised to wear them for longer than four weeks as it can prevent natural hair growth.

Micro rings or the micro bonding methods last for 3-4 months before needing to be re-fitted (as they have grown 1.5 inches away from your scalp).

The lifespan of clip-in hair extensions will depend on how well you take care of them, what products you use on them, and how often you wear them.

7. Are Hair Extensions Bad For Your Hair?

It depends on the type and application methods. Temporary type is only for short time use therefore using them daily, frequently will cause long term damage. Permanent hair extensions may cause damage due to the bonding, gluing, and pulling on the hair. Therefore, you should treat the hair carefully, use correct product, and meet skillful hairstylists to avoid unfortunate breakage.

8. Who Can Wear Hair Extensions?

The answer depends on the types of extensions. However, we recommend you to hear the advice from experts before you decide to purchase any hair extensions. Everyone can wear clip-in and tape-in hair extensions. They are safe for men, women, and even children to wear. For anyone experiencing severe hair loss, however, we recommend you seek advice from a doctor first prior to purchasing clip-in hair extensions to ensure it is the right resource for you. Sew-in hair extensions are usually used for people with thick hair, coarse or naturally super curly hair. It is extremely essential to let a professional hairdresser to apply these extensions to avoid uncomfortable tugging.

9. Can I Curl And Straighten Hair Extensions?

It depends on whether they are synthetic or natural. 100% Remy human hair can be curled, straightened, blow-dried and styled just like your own natural hair. Synthetic hair can’t do that.

However, we suggest to always use a heat protectant spray or natural heat protectant while styling your extensions to preserve and extend the lifespan of them. Additionally, we recommend to only use a low heat setting of 120C/250F, as anything higher runs the risk of damaging the hair. While our own hair may be able to handle a high heat setting, our hair is also constantly getting revitalized from the scalp, whereas hair extensions don't get that sort of constant nutrition. Using a low heat setting will prolong the lifespan of your extensions.

10. What Products Can I Use On Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions can’t get consistent nourishment from the scalp like natural hair, so we should choose the right products to preserve them. We recommend to use organic hair products or at least alcohol-free and sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners (alcohol and sulfate can dry out the hair, leading to frizziness, matting or tangling). We also highly recommend to use a heat protectant spray prior to heat styling your extensions and nourishing hair oils or serums, which will prolong the lifespan of them.

11. How To Wash And Dry Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions don’t need to be washed very often. We recommend washing every 15 to 20 wears or when there is too much product build-up and they become unmanageable to style because the longer they will last you. We highly recommend using sulfate-free and alcohol-free hair products, as these ingredients can dry the hair out, leading to frizzy, tangle hair.

You can wash your extensions the same way you would do with your own hair. Apply shampoo first, rinse off, then apply a generous amount of conditioner from top to bottom, working the product through the hair. Rinse off the conditioned, then rinse the extensions again in cold water to lock in moisture. Next, apply a deep conditioning hair mask throughout the extensions, to restore smoothness, nourishment, and shine. Brush each weft with a wide tooth comb from bottom to top to work the hair mask through the hair and remove any tangles. Leave the hair mask in for at least 4-6 hours or overnight for best results! Finally lay each weft flat to air-dry on top of a towel on a flat surface. .

12. How To Brush Hair Extensions?

First, you need to choose a proper comb or brush for your extensions treatment. We recommend you to use a large paddle brush or a soft bristled brush or a white tooth comb. Then, gather all the hair together by collect all of the wefts on top of one another. Gently run your fingers through extensions to get rid of tangles. Remember, be patient and don’t rip them. The next step is to use a brush and calmly brush your extensions from bottom to top. Slowly remove tangles an inch at a time starting from the tips until your reach the roots and the weft track. If you go over any annoying knot, take it out and gently brush it through. The last step will make sure that all the tangles are removed. It is using your hand, in a gentle way, run your fingers around the weft track to ensure that tangles have been displaced.

13. Can I Dye/Color My Hair Extensions?

You can dye your hair extensions as long as they are human hair extensions. Human hair extensions can be colored, heated and styled just like your virgin hair but they requires extra attempt to maintain their quality. Quality of extensions does play a major role. There are several things you should keep in mind while dealing with human hair extensions:

  • Do a strand test before you do anything.
  • Virgin Remy hair extensions are the best type of weaves for dyeing.
  • It could take numerous applications to lighten your hair extensions.
  • Strong chemicals can damage your hair extensions after dyeing process.
  • You should make decision carefully about what color you will dye, what products you will use, etc. because dyeing or toning may alter the structure of the hair, resulting in a lowered lifespan.

14. Can I Sleep With Hair Extensions?

We do not recommend sleeping with your hair extensions clipped in, as this could cause excessive tangling, which can be damaging to the extensions as well as your own hair. We recommend to remove your extensions every night before bed.

15. How Do You Take Care Of Hair Extensions?

Caring for hair extensions isn't difficult. The main rules are:

  • Avoid oiliness at the roots to prevent the connections from slipping or going sticky.
  • No inverting your head upside down head or in high ponytails as this pulls on the underside of the connection.
  • No aggressive pulling.
