The shag is back in a big way for 2019. Yes, biggest haircut trend of 2019 is a modern take on the shag cut. It infuses soft layers, long fringe, lots of body, and just happens to be super flattering on everyone who tries it. Anne Hathaway’s new cut has proven it.

In case you haven’t been obsessively documenting Anne Hathaway’s hair status, she doesn’t switch up her hair very often. She generally sticks with a natural brown shade and medium length cut. There was a pixie moment in 2014 but ever since that, the classic beauty strictly kept her chocolate locks just below shoulder level (mainly styled in ladylike curls).

But on April 27, we were so surprised and excited to know that the 36-year-old actress cut her hair into a short, shag haircut, making humans everywhere want to grab a pair of scissors and go to town on themselves. It’s the perfect ’70s-style shag that’s actually one of summer 2019’s hottest cuts.

The shag cut is the work of celeb hairstylist Adir Abergel, who first posted a photo of the new hair to Instagram, captioning it “New cut. New vibes.” He gave Hathaway the shag so she is sure to look amazing during her press tour for her new movie, The Hustle (May 10), in which she costars alongside actress Rebel Wilson.

In a video posted to Abergel's Insta-stories, he offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Hathaway getting her spur of the moment haircut right before the promotion of Hustlers in New York City. After adding in soft layers, Abergel sprays and separates the wispy pieces for extra dimension.

Anne's '70s-inspired haircut is one that's perfect for when higher temperatures begin to hit. The style works on virtually every hair length and type, and looks super flattering even during those sweaty summer days. As an additional nod to the warmer weather ahead, Anne pushed her eye-grazing fringe to the side, proving that it's possible to have bangs with minimal effort required.

While Hathaway isn't typically keen on switching up her length, she has been known to experiment when it comes to her hair color. Just last year, she went from brunette to blonde to red, and back to chocolate brown in a matter of months. Given her wide-ranging history on the color spectrum, it's possible that she'll eventually pair her shaggy chop with brand new dye job.

But regardless of the reason, the effect is the same: ridiculously cool, summer-ready hair. The lighter style has her ready for warm weather and with long bangs framing her face, we think she looks better than ever. According to Abergel, the cut is perfect if you have straight or wavy hair. Lucky for us, he shared exactly how to get the look in another post, right after his comments blew up with people loving the look.

Abergel also posted the second photo of Hathaway’s new hair cut including a breakdown on exactly how to recreate the messy, piece-y texture on straight or wavy hair:

  • First, rough dry your damp hair with your fingers “until it’s completely dry."
  • Then “add some random waves with a curling iron, a 1-inch iron is perfect.”
  • Once your waves have cooled, rake a few dabs of mousse through them (Abergel used Virtue Moisture-Defining Whip), working from ends to roots
  • Smooth a few drops of shine-enhancing serum (he used Kristin Ess Working Serum) from tips to the middle of your hair.
  • Diffuse the product into your hair with your blow-dryer and a diffuser attachment (the heat helps set the product and create those piece-y waves).

A fact for this shag hair cut: the messier it is, the better, which is why it’s honestly the best haircut to try for summer, when your hair is already a humid, swampy mess.

We have watched Hathaway evolve from a teen starlet to a red carpet style star, with iconic hair and makeup styles that include sleek pixies, wavy lobs, and her Princess Diaries-era chignons.

Hathaway always has her beauty constants – that luminescent skin and those rosy cheeks – but she has been able to have some more fun recently with her look, including dramatic yellow-blonde hair for the film Serenity and now, this subtle, sexy shag.
